The Medicine Hat Waves Swim Club was well represented this weekend at the 2012 Speedo Alberta Senior Championships swim meet. Waves swimmers, Abby Mayer (age 15) and Anna Dunphy (age 13) attended the 3-day meet held at the Family Leisure Centre, January 27-29. Both girls showed great Waves spirit with terrific swimming and the club is extremely proud of their performance! A special thank you to Coach Betsy for coaching the girls this weekend.
Abby Mayer had several excellent swims at this meet. Always daunting to come to a provincial meet, it became more so as it was the first meet of the season for our senior swimmer. Abby swam well in her backstroke events taking off 2 seconds in her 100 metre backstroke. As the weekend progressed, Abby's confidence grew and she capped off her weekend by taking over 8 seconds off her previous best time in the 100 metre individual medley during Sunday's event. Great swimming Abby! We hope to see you at more meets.
Anna Dunphy had a strong weekend showing why she is one of the top 13 year old prospects in Alberta. Anna made 5 finals and achieved a new Western time and a 14 year old Age Group National time with her 100m freestyle swim. She narrowlly missed another Western time in the 50m freestyle final and that best effort places her at number two in Swim Alberta's ranking for 50m free this year. It was also Anna's 7th Age Group National time and her 2nd Western time in her first season under Waves Head Coach Tom Mortlock. The 14 year old Age Group National time is the earliest she has ever received this standard and having this standard qualifies her for the Canadian Age Group National Championship in late July where she will represent the Waves.
Congratulations to both swimmers and Coach Tom.
We'd also like to thank the Waves cheering section who came out to watch. The Regier family and Jans family were there to cheer on our girls and Abby and Anna both appreciated having their teammates there to cheer them on.
